Sir Winston Churchill Public Speaking Competition

The Sir Winston Churchill Public Speaking Competition- This was our first attendance at The Sir Winston Churchill Public Speaking Competition and M Odeniran will be back next year as chairperson of the Year 5 and 6 team.

Our team consisted of G Pidgeon, M Odeniran, A Guinness and A Miller-Edge.   They were asked to incorporate Winston Churchill's life and ideas into a speech for which they had given up a term's worth of activity time to prepare. Judges included Winston Churchill's relatives and Churchill academics. The team was questioned by the panel and stood up well to demanding questioning in front of a room full of teachers and competitors at Blenheim Palace.

In their feedback, the judges praised the content of the team's speech and their understanding of the seriousness of the topic in their response to the questioning.

They particularly enjoyed how the team had used Churchill's, “Nothing in life is so exhilarating as to be shot at without result” to celebrate the merits of gaming, but how seriously they took the issue which they likened to the addictiveness of gambling. The team argued for the introduction of a mandatory addictiveness measure on gaming adverts similar to PEGI ratings or safety warnings on gambling adverts.
