Tudor Times at Sulgrave Manor

Year 5 had the perfect day for their trip to Sulgrave Manor - the sun was actually shining! The children were very excited as we were greeted by Mistress Kitty and Mistress Louise and even more excited when they saw the lovely Tudor clothes they would be wearing for the day. The girls were quite taken by their long kirtles and soon let their hair down to show they were unmarried. The boys were lucky enough to have buttons on their shirts and even a small ruff. After we were suitably dressed and had practised our 'courtesies', we had a tour of Sulgrave Manor and found out a lot about Tudor life, including the role of a spit boy, why we say 'sleep tight' and the very rude name for a chamber pot!  After a delicious (non-Tudor) lunch, the children visited a Tudor schoolroom and completed some very fancy writing using a quill. Mistress Kitty was very impressed with the children's reading and writing and didn't need to use the birch, thank goodness. Finally, we played some fun Tudor games, including Nim, Three Men's Morris and lots of outside games too.

Thank you to the staff at Sulgrave Manor for helping us to find out so much about the Tudors and making our visit so enjoyable.
