Junior Maths Challenge Results 2008
This year sets 1 in Years 7 and 8 took this challenge, as did, for our first time, Year 7 set 2; and there were plenty of good scores. It was encouraging to see that in the breakdown of our results as a school, in 12 of the first 15 questions [the main core of the challenge] the percentage of WHS students to get the correct answer was significantly above the percentage of those nationally who got the correct answer. Also, the majority of our students scored above the national average, which is particularly pleasing since we had included a set 2 for the first time.
Seven children were awarded Bronze certificates by the UK Mathematics Trust [who organise the challenge]. They were [in ascending order of scores] Charlotte Russell-Parsons, Henry Coldstream, Daniel Firoozan, Henry Woodward, Henry Scott, Katie White and George Jackman. Silver certificates went to [in ascending order again]; Edward Farrow, Edward Clarke, Archie Brogden [7 set 2!], Sophie Oliver, Harry Umbers, George Bell and Ellamanda Gee. Ellamanda was, incidentally, one mark off a Gold certificate! Gold certificates went to Sam Ringer and Chris Palmer. Chris scored extremely well and achieved a mark of 110, out of a possible 135 [5 marks per question for questions 1 to 15, and then 6 marks per question for questions 16 to 25].
Chris’ score was extremely pleasing and was also easily good enough to enter him for the second round of the challenge, known as the Junior Mathematical Olympiad, which is held at school in June later this year.
Well done to Chris for his result and good luck in the next round. Congratulations to all those who received certificates and well done to Year 7 set 2 for being considered strong enough to have a go at the challenge this year.
