This year, Yr 5 set 1 and Yr 6 set 1 (and a few members of 5 set 2) sat the Primary Maths Challenge, which is set by the Mathematical Association. The children had 45 minutes to answer 25 questions of varying difficulty.
Bronze certificates went to the following who scored 16 out of 25; Patrick Allen, Francesca Wilcox, Evie Barter, George Cozens and Nicola Roberts. The following scored 17 and also received Bronze certificates; William Coombs and Benjamin Keyser. Silver certificates went to Tom Bracey [19] and James Liebrecht [20]. Our top scorers were Oliver Worrall who scored an excellent 23 out of 25, and Ned Gordon who just squeezed past Oliver with a very strong score of 24 [which is particularly encouraging seeing that Ned is in Year 5].
Well done to all those who sat the challenge and we shall find out soon whether anyone has done well enough to get through to the Finals in February. I hope so!
‘SYMS’ The Society of Young Mathematicians’
For anyone interested in maths and developing it beyond the classroom, the ‘Mathematical Association’ [as above] has created the ‘Society of Young Mathematicians’ [SYMS]. There is an annual fee of £8, which entitles you to receive two journals three times a year. There is also a website www.syms.org.uk, with problems to solve, ideas to investigate and discussion boards on various matters and problems. The society is probably most relevant to children at Winchester House from Years 3 to 8 inclusive, but they say adults can join too! If anyone is interested in joining please go to the website, have a look and then follow the instructions on how to apply. Enjoy the problem solving!
