Rutland Water
Boarders – Rutland Water
On Sunday 15th May, boarders headed to the beautiful Rutland Water accompanied by Mr. Butcher and Gappers Mr. Maunsell and Mr. Wilson. Although the weather was fair on departure, by arrival it was rather overcast and there was enough of a wind to make sailing the ‘Laser Picos’ rather interesting for a group of largely novices. Mr. Butcher set the standard from the beginning by capsizing in the first 5 minutes! He was reassured by the swift kindness of Mr. Wilson in doing likewise, twice, so as not to make him feel too inept. Paul, Diego and Alex fared rather better for a long while and Mr Maunsell put us all to shame. Eventually, though, the boys’ time came and they too had a dunk. Lunch was a welcome chance to warm up and stock up.
The afternoon was much milder and kayaks and rafts were tackled in high spirits with plenty of falling in. ‘Kayak polo’ saw a resounding victory for the black paddles and half the competitors swimming for much of the match! The staff got a little too cocky with the raft race, however, and went far further than necessary before a shift of body position caused another mass capsize and a rather less effective raft. All ended the day thoroughly soaked but having had a great time. Hot showers helped us warm up and the minibus turned into a dormitory on the way back for all but poor old Mr. B at the wheel. A lovely trip!
