This is a new tournament and it was a delight to be able to attend. We started off rather hesitantly and were lucky to get a draw against Chandlings.
Even in our second game we still weren’t on fire and there was some unfortunate running between the posts and the fielding was not as tight as it could or should have been.
The girls hadn’t yet woken up! The matches were only 25 balls per innings and we needed to start playing from ball one! However it was good to beat St Hugh’s [the only team to beat these girls last year as U11s].
Versus
Beaudesert
Park
we began to show more steel and determination and the match against Cokethorpe B went very well.
We won our group so were in to the semis, versus Akeley Wood.
In this match our true potential came to light and we brushed them aside with strong batting and clinical fielding.
The final against St Helen’s & St Katherine’s was very good.
They are a confident and strong hitting team, but we kept their score down to a reasonable level in the 18 ball final.
The other team hit well, but we also fielded with passion, communication and a level of connection that had eluded us at the start of the afternoon.
We came into bat requiring 7 to win.
We made the most of some fielding errors and also hit the ball into gaps or beyond fielders.
It was a very enjoyable final, and I was very glad to see the girls ultimately rise to the occasion.
As John Barrowman would say ‘You were fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!’
