Pre Prep
Welcome to Year 1

5 - 6 Year Olds.
All of the good teaching practices initiated in the Nursery and Reception classes are continued in Year 1 with some new additions to the weekly routine and curriculum.

English
They went in one by one.......
Children read on a daily basis at school either individually or within a group.  They share and enjoy a wide range of rhymes, poetry, stories and non-fiction books which are used either through the reading scheme, classroom book collection or during regular reading sessions in the Pre-Prep Library.  Reading homework is taken home each night and a spelling list is also sent home on a regular basis.

In the Lent Term the children are introduced to cursive writing.  A variety of materials are used including Jolly Phonics and the Nelson English scheme.  Ability grouping for grammar and phonics may be introduced during the year.

Speaking and listening are an important part of the school day.
Following instructions, listening courteously, valuing others opinions and expressing their own ideas at the appropriate time help to develop good manners.

Children take part in a Christmas production and class assemblies throughout the year.

Mathematics
We follow the Abacus Mathematics scheme. Where necessary, concrete apparatus is used for calculations of addition and subtraction.  Ability grouping may be introduced during the year.

Science
This is aimed at stimulating and developing observational skills and encouraging the children to ask why, where, when and what if, over a wide range of topics.

Topic Work
Our topics are chosen so that over an academic year the children are exposed to History, Geography (Humanities) and Science to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.  We usually combine our topic with a relevant outing.

Music
The children have two 40 minute music sessions each week, which include singing, percussion and musical appreciation.

French
This is taught weekly.  The emphasis is mainly on oral work.

ICT
Children have weekly lessons with the ICT co-ordinator throughout the school year and have access to computers within the classroom.

PE
PE specialists from the Upper School take the children twice a week for games and movement lessons.  The children have a swimming lesson once a week.

Learning to dribble!

P.S.H.E
Through our Personal, Social and Health Education programme the children are encouraged to share thoughts, feelings and experiences during Circle Time sessions, as well as learning the important skills of listening, sharing and self-care.

and finally....we aim to create a happy, positive atmosphere where the children strive to do their best and have a real sense of achievement.
