THE CURRICULUM

English
English work is assisted by Nelson English Scheme for grammar, handwriting, spelling and comprehension skills. Children will be put into ability groups for some of the Maths and English lessons. Creative writing and work linked to Humanities is also covered. Joined up handwriting is continued from Year 1, encouraging correct pencil grip and letter formation.

Flying the flag

Reading
Children read on a daily basis at school either individually or in group shared reading.  They share and enjoy a wide range of rhymes, poetry, short plays, stories and non-fiction books.  Reading homework from a colour coded scheme is taken home each night.  Each child's reading is tested twice a year.

Maths
The children work in ability groups.  The Abacus Maths Scheme and other resources are followed for Numeracy; other Maths work is done as group topic sessions.  Topics include money, measurement, shape, fractions, weight, capacity, graphs and time. Mental Arithmetic is regularly covered and tested throughout the week.
Times tables are tested each week.

History, Geography and Science
These subjects are covered throughout the year in termly topics and are often connected with an outing.

French
This is taught weekly, by an Upper School member of staff.  The emphasis is mainly on oral work.

Games and PE
Upper School staff take games, PE and dance each week, mainly in the Sports Hall, but also outside, weather permitting.

Keeping fit in the Sports Hall

ICT
Children have weekly lessons with the ICT co-ordinator throughout the school year and have access to computers within the classroom.

Music
Music is taken by Upper School staff members weekly.  This is the year in which children may start to learn a musical instrument.

P.S.H.E
Through our Personal, Social and Health Education programme the children are encouraged to share thoughts, feelings and experiences during Circle Time sessions as well as learning the important skills of listening, sharing and self-care.
The meanings of Parables and other Bible stories are also discussed during these sessions.  Children also have the opportunity to learn about other faiths and beliefs.
