DELICIOUS DUMPLINGS FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR

DELICIOUS DUMPLINGS FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR

Since the start of the Lent Term, the Mandarin Club has been focusing on the Chinese New Year theme.

The Children have completed a variety of activities including making Rat Origami bookmarks and exploring the New Year culture in China.

This week, on Saturday (25th January), it will be the beginning of the Year of the Rat.  Today, with the great support from the Winchester House Kitchen Team, the Children in Mandarin Club had the privilege of being able to celebrate the Chinese New Year by making the 饺子🥟 (Jiaozi, dumplings).
Everyone worked very hard in the kitchen and enjoyed the making and most of all, loved the food that they made by themselves! The children were very engaged and enjoyed the learning about a very different culture.
Huge thanks to Michael and Laura from Catering and to Mrs Skillings for all her hard work with Mandarin Club throughout the Year and for teaching the Children some wonderful new skills.

Mrs Skillings has kindly provided the recipe for the Chinese Dumplings should anyone wish to create them at home:

Chinese Dumplings (饺子)Recipe

You will need:

500g Plain Flour

Water—-One mug volume (full)

250g mince pork

1 chopped leek (tiny Pieces)

1 teaspoon Sesame oil

3 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 table spoon salt

1 large egg

2 table spoon soya sauce

1 teaspoon Chinese five spices (optional)

Make a dough for the pastry:

Mix the water and plain flour until it form into a dough, cover the dough with cling film and keep in room temperature for 5-10mins.

Make the filling:

Mix all the rest of ingredients in a bowl (no order needed, be brave and have fun) leave it on the side.

Check the dough, knead it until it felt soft and not sticky. Add more plain flours if you need to.

Spread a good amount of flours on the board. Cut the dough into 7-8 pieces

Make the Dumplings:

Pick up 1 piece, roll it into a cylinder shape, width about two fingers size, then cut into 5-6 small cylinders.

Dip each of them into the dry flour, flatten them, then use rolling pin to make pastry.

Fill in the pastry with the filling and seal it.

How to cook:

Boiling water, put the sealed dumplings into the water cook for 10-15mins. Take them out gently, be careful when you bite as the inside would be hotter!

Enjoy! ^-^

Wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year!
