Physical Education and Sport
Sport is a cherished and traditional strength here at Winchester House. We have an all-inclusive approach which gives every child an opportunity to represent the school and experience all the additional benefits that come with it (Bus journeys to opposition schools, match teas to name but a few!).

There are many school teams catering for all age groups across both sexes and for all abilities. The record of success is impressive and we offer an extensive gifted and talented programme within the department.

The main sports for the boys are rugby, hockey and cricket and the girls play netball, hockey and rounders. The children are coached by specialist staff across all the age groups and leave Winchester House with a strong grounding in technique and sportsmanship. We encourage the children to view sport as a ‘skill and passion for life’ with a strong emphasis on enjoyment.

We have nine acres of extremely flat, well-drained and expertly maintained playing fields that allow us to host a large number of home fixtures, as well as a full sized state-of-the-art AstroTurf, which opened in September 2014. Games take place on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with matches on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All pupils also get one Physical Education lesson a week.

Michaelmas Term: Rugby, Hockey and Cross-Country
Lent Term: Hockey, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Cross-Country and Football
Summer Term: Cricket, Rounders, Athletics and Tennis

Physical Education:

In the Physical Education department we pride ourselves on giving the children opportunities to learn and understand new sports and skills away from the traditional games programme.

Physical Education lessons include: swimming, indoor hockey, gymnastics, short tennis, badminton, ball handling skills, basketball and athletics. We also teach the children the importance of warm-ups and warm downs using SAQ (speed, agility and quickness) and ABCs (Agility, Balance and Coordination) exercises. Specialist staff teach the children from Nursery through to Year 8.

At the end of every term the children are asked to fill out a personal profile which gives them an opportunity to build a portfolio of teams represented, sports played and skills learnt from Year 4-8 which will stay with them for the duration of their time at Winchester House.

Pupils can also opt for extra sporting activities during the evening activity sessions. These include equestrian, tennis, football, golf, gym club, karate, rifle shooting, squash, skiing, table tennis, American football, hockey and swimming squad.

Winchester House School prides itself on outstanding facilities, including the completion of the The Seymour Astro in September 2014.

In the Michaelmas Term there are 6 rugby pitches and 1 full size AstroTurf.

In the Lent term there are 3 football pitches, 2 grass hockey pitches, 1 full size AstroTurf, 5 netball courts.

In the Summer Term there are 3 cricket pitches, 7 grass cricket nets, 4 indoor cricket nets, 4 rounders pitches, a 400m 10-lane athletics track.

In the Summer Term we host an athletics meeting inviting 12 other schools to compete. The standard is exceptionally high and it gives all the children involved an opportunity to reach their qualifying times and distances for the Area Meeting and Pre National qualifiers.

Sports Day is a house event and points are awarded that go towards the end of term ‘Winning house trip’.

In addition we have 8 AstroTurf tennis courts, 2 squash courts, an outdoor heated swimming pool, a rifle shooting range. A superbly equipped sports hall, that is let throughout the year in the evenings to outside clubs, has facilities for hockey, football, tennis, basketball, 4 badminton courts, volleyball, netball, 4 cricket nets, climbing frames and gymnastics.

We also have all year use of Brackley indoor swimming pool (also adjacent to playing fields).

The school provides a comprehensive and exceptionally competitive fixture list in all the major and minor games.
