The girls’ squash team went to the National Finals on Wednesday, which in itself was an achievement, and guaranteed them a top 8 finish in the country.

Faced with a tough draw against Gosforth Academy from Newcastle, the top ranked team in the country, the girls knew it was going to be tough. Going into the final match, we were tied at 2-2. Captain Emily went on court to play against a very strong player and was very quickly 8-1 down in the first game. Emily dug in though, and managed to come back and win the first game 12-10. In the second game, it was neck and neck all the way to 6-6 before Emily pulled away to win 11-7 and give the win to WHS. This meant we went to the semi finals to play against Bedford Modern. We had played Bedford Modern a couple of times in friendly matches but this was a Year 9 competition and they had four strong Year 9 players. The girls perhaps put a little bit of pressure on themselves and it wasn’t to be, as Bedford won to move to the final. In the third place playoff, the girls played Epsom College who were also strong. Another tough match and an eventual loss but a 4
th place finish in a Year 9 and under competition in our first year – we’ll take that!
