Reception

For children aged 4 years old in September

Children enjoy a smooth transition from Nursery to Reception, where the happy, hands-on, engaging atmosphere encourages children to be creative and to discover and explore the world around them, becoming independent, confident, enquiring learners.

We introduce a more formal structure to part of the School day to give pupils the best start in literacy (reading and writing) and mathematics (number, shape, space and measures). Children continue to have frequent opportunities to lead their own learning through playful explorations, as well as continuing to enjoy regular ‘Going Wild’ sessions.

Alongside specialist teaching in Music and PE, we introduce a weekly French lesson and there are further opportunities for educational visits to support our topics.

Winchester House School | Year 1 | Independent Prep School

Year 1

For children aged 5 years old in September

Year 1  continues to develop and respond to children’s needs and abilities, offering the support and challenge they need to help them to work to their individual strengths and to achieve their best.

We build on the strong foundations of Reception through the Key Stage 1 curriculum: with Reading, Writing, Phonics and Maths being at the heart of all we do. The Creative Curriculum formulates the learning across all of the subjects, enabling connections to be made within an immersive environment, including a range of school trips.

We encourage inquisitive, creative, reflective and active learning. Specialist lessons and ‘Going Wild’ sessions continue and we introduce weekly swimming lessons.

Year 2 | Pre Prep | Winchester House School, Northamptonshire

Year 2

For children aged 6 years old in September

Year 2 marks the child’s final year in Pre-Prep and the focus is on the development of organisational skills, responsibility, independence and long-lasting friendships.

The broad, balanced curriculum provides the children with new challenges and opportunities.

During the year, the children increase their involvement in the school community through optional participation in the Junior Choir and the public speaking competition. As the most senior members of Pre-Prep, the children are important role models for the younger years and are given greater independence and responsibilities.

Year 2 | Winchester House School | Northamptonshire | Year 3

We recognise that the transition to Upper School (Years 3 to 8) needs to be carefully planned and organised for the emotional well-being of our pupils, both in the short and long term.

When the children are moving to new year groups, we put lots of activities in place to aid a smooth transition. These include Come and Play sessions, familiarisation mornings, taster mornings, new children’s picnics and move up mornings.

The transition from Year 2 to Year 3 is a milestone for the children and marks a new chapter in their school life. The Year 2 class teachers plan a detailed and thorough ‘Passport’ programme for the children in the Summer Term to ensure they feel prepared and happy for the next part of their Winchester House journey. Activities include a tour of the Upper School, a visit to the school Chapel, buddy reading sessions in Year 3 and visits to many of the Upper School classrooms.
