Childhood is a time of  joy, discovery and wonder. At our Winchester House Pre-Prep (Bradshaw), we cherish and celebrate these precious moments, providing a nurturing, challenging and exciting environment where young minds can flourish.

Our Pre-Prep curriculum is a tapestry of exploration, creativity and growth, where children discover their passions and extend their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

Our teaching goes beyond the curriculum; for even our youngest Housians, our teachers are storytellers, guides and mentors.

We proudly follow ‘The Winchester House Way,’ a philosophy that emphasises values such as honesty, helpfulness, and forgiveness. We instil in our pupils the art of listening, the essence of being a good friend, and the importance of treating everyone with respect and kindness.

The Creative Curriculum

Through this framework, topics take centre stage, driving learning across various subjects throughout a term. From English to ICT, Music to Science, our teachers creatively weave each topic into the curriculum, helping our pupils develop a holistic and comprehensive understanding. This is complemented by an array of enrichment activities, ranging from visits to the school, such as jungle roadshows and a mobile planetarium, to exploratory outings to local educational sites like castles, museums, and farms. 

Our children engage in vibrant and imaginative activities throughout the Creative Curriculum, encouraging them to connect the dots between different areas of knowledge.

Play

We believe that play is the cornerstone of childhood, and our facilities and grounds offer many opportunities for young explorers and adventurers to have fun, build friendships andmake discoveries in the outdoors.

Climbing equipment, construction play, skipping ropes, tricycles, balls and more are available for children during playtimes, and our expansive outdoor areas, such as the astroturf and fields, provide additional spaces for children to run, jump, and engage in active play, helping their physical development and love for the great outdoors.

Physical Education

Led by specialist sports staff, we provide structured and engaging sessions twice a week, ensuring that every child is equipped with fundamental skills and a strong foundation for a lifelong appreciation of sports.

Gymnastics, dance and ball games all form a part of the curriculum and in Year 1 and beyond, our pupils dive into swimming, with half a term dedicated to the sport each term.

We also offer a variety of after-school clubs where children can explore their interests further and develop their athletic abilities in a fun and supportive environment. These have included Rugby, Dance and Tennis.

Performing Arts

Pre-Prep pupils have two group music lessons a week with the  School’s Music Department. Individual lessons with specialist teachers can begin from Year 2 (our musical evenings offer a showcase for their talents). 

Our young stars take centre stage in our Christmas Plays, and Grandparents’ Morning is a celebration that brings generations together, as our pupils showcase their talents. 

Year 2 children participate in a competition that helps develop confidence and eloquence. In Year 2, pupils can also join our Junior Choir.

The Outdoors

Lessons, activities, clubs and trips give our pupils opportunity to learn in the outdoors throughout the year. 

In Pre-Prep we love being in the outdoors and have puddle-suits to ensure we can go out whatever the weather… and we do! Children in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 have access to the outdoors from their classes throughout the school day. 

Our Secret Garden is a walled garden hidden in the School grounds that provides an exciting space for exploration and investigation in the outdoors. Areas in the garden are left to run wild but we also have a designated pergola for any outdoor lessons.
